Styrax benzoin is a tree native to Indonesia. The resin has been used for centuries for its warming, vanilla-like aroma. Benzoin gum powder is often used in perfume and incense blends for its pleasing scent but can also be employed as a stabilizer and fixative.

The resin also called gum benjamin, has a vanilla like aroma and ranges in color from pale yellow to red brown and is harvested by making triangular incisions into the tree's bark to establish a flow, which then hardens into lumps when exposed to air and sunlight. Benzoin is used in the perfume industry as an antioxidant, stabilizer, and fixative. It will sometimes harden under fluctuations in humidity.

PROSES OF PRODUCING SUMATRA GUM BENZOIN

PROCESS OF PRODUCING NATURAL SUMATRA GUM BENZOIN.

Sumatra gum benzoin is dried resin which gained from benzoin trees of 7 years of age. It is warm and has aroma similar to vanilla when dried. The process of tapping and harvesting gum benzoin resin takes one year   By using special knife, the benzoin tree trunk is slightly cut, and then, the  liquid benzoin either accumulates beneath the bark or exudes from the incisions. The incisions are made when the tree is seven years, so that the white gum benzoin resins harden will appear from the skin. After 4 - 6 months since cutting, the gum benzoin resins hardens on the tree trunks at which point' the resin can be harvested. The resin that has been harvested is not clean yet, it must be taken home and cleaned from wastes and dried for 3 to 6 months to remove impurities. After the resin has cleaned from wastes and dried , it is ready for export.

Benzoin trees from which gum benzoin obtained grow a lot in the forest of North Sumatra - Indonesia. It grows to about 12- 30 meters in height and live 70 - 100 years. The tree has grey bark, simple leaves, short and small. The Benzoin is collected as a milky-white substance, but as it is exposed to air and sunlight the resin solidifies. Once solidified, the resin takes the form of small crystalline stones that are used as incense. It releases a sweet, balsamic lightly vanilla odour.

Gum Benzoin is a major component of incense used in Russian Orthodox churches and other Orthodox Christian societies. It is also used in blended types of Japanese incense, Indian incense, Chinese incense and Papier d'Arménie. Gum benzoin origin

It has become the great plus for Tapanuli area to be blessed by God to be the only place in Indonesia or probably in the world where gum benzoin trees are growing well. It must be the special pride of course for the people there, more specially for those who survive on the trees products (resin).

It has been well known all over the worldtworld that the resin which obtained by incesing the bark of the trees is very benefit for many purposes, such like: parfume making compound, incense, aromatics products, medical herbal and etc, that,s why everybody who deal in this unique goods should take care more and more seriously in every factor that related with the products, not only to manage to produce higher intake, but also thinking over the future and sustainability.

There must be something that can be done to increase the harvest volume and quality also, so, it will bare satisfaction for Farmers (producers) and customers (buyers).

Once again, gum benzoin is not the tree which can grow well very well every where, but only in very limited areas, such like Tapanuli - North Sumatra - Indonesia.
